Rappler is one of the most read news publications in the Philippines and a global leader in the fight for press freedom. In January of 2019, in partnership with the Google News Initiative, we began re-imagining what Rappler could be.
Research, Product Strategy, Content Strategy, Product Design
Our work centred around one core objective: Rappler’s mission to empower communities of action. Through community research/workshopping we began to define what role Rappler might play in bridging the gap between grassroots organizations, government, partners, and the public.
"
After you embrace your fear, what’s next? You build for the future. You imagine the world as it should be, and you create. "
Maria Ressa, CEO, Rappler
Through concept development with Rappler’s newsroom and readers, we imagined various ways to embolden the public towards action.
The redesign was an opportunity to rebuild the design system around the news content itself. Grounded in a content strategy focused on inspired action we created an accessible, mobile first design system that created clear visual markers for differentiating various types of content. The design itself was rooted in 3 main content structures, topics, movements, and news.
Our continued work with Rappler, is looking at what role Rappler might play in empowering communities of action. Through continued workshops with readers and grassroots organizers we continue to prototype new ways of driving the public to take action.
